1. He Started His Career as a Pilot
Walsh began his aviation career in the late 1970s as a cadet pilot with Aer Lingus. His early years gave him hands-on experience in flight operations, scheduling, and crew management.
In 2001, he became CEO of Aer Lingus, making the journey from the cockpit to the boardroom a defining part of his career.
2. He Has Led Some of the World’s Biggest Airlines
After Aer Lingus, Walsh went on to become CEO of British Airways and later Chief Executive of International Airlines Group (IAG).
At IAG, he oversaw the integration of airlines operating across different markets while dealing with complex regulatory and labour issues.
In 2021, he became Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), representing nearly 300 airlines worldwide.
3. He Has Managed Major Industry Challenges
Walsh’s career has included some of aviation’s most difficult periods, from economic downturns and industry disruption to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He also played a key role in the integration of British Airways and Iberia under IAG.
During his time at IATA, he focused on industry-wide issues including aviation safety, sustainability and cooperation among airlines.
