Meta is gradually bringing voice and video calling to WhatsApp Web, allowing users to make calls directly from their browsers.
Dubai: Meta has begun rolling out voice and video calling on WhatsApp Web, allowing users to make and receive calls directly from their browser without downloading the desktop application.
The update is part of a broader upgrade to WhatsApp’s calling experience, bringing new features such as call transfer, waiting rooms for group calls, QuickHD video, and noise suppression across supported devices.
Voice and Video Calls Come to the Browser
Until now, users who wanted to make voice or video calls from a computer had to install the WhatsApp Desktop app for Windows or macOS.
With the latest rollout, users can start one-to-one and group voice or video calls directly through WhatsApp Web using supported browsers, eliminating the need to install additional software.
The feature builds on WhatsApp’s multi-device capabilities, allowing users to continue conversations seamlessly across phones, tablets, and computers.
Call Transfer Lets Users Switch Devices
One of the biggest additions is Call Transfer, which allows users to move an ongoing group call between devices without disconnecting.
For example, a user can begin a call on their smartphone while travelling and later transfer it to WhatsApp Web or the desktop app after reaching home or the office. The call can also be moved back to a mobile device if needed.
Waiting Rooms Add More Control to Group Calls
Meta is also introducing waiting rooms for calls created using WhatsApp call links.
Hosts can enable a “Require approval to join” option, allowing participants to wait until they are admitted into the call. The feature gives organisers greater control over who joins group conversations, particularly for larger meetings or community calls.
Faster HD Video With QuickHD
The update includes QuickHD, a feature designed to improve video quality much earlier in a call.
Instead of waiting for the connection to stabilise before switching to high definition, WhatsApp says QuickHD can deliver HD-quality video within the first few seconds of a conversation, creating a smoother calling experience.
Noise Suppression Improves Audio Quality
WhatsApp is also adding Noise Suppression, which reduces background sounds during voice and video calls to make conversations clearer in noisy environments.
Users can switch the feature on or off through the in-call settings depending on their preference.
Calls Remain End-to-End Encrypted
Meta said browser-based voice and video calls continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption, the same security technology used across WhatsApp messages and calls.
The web version also supports familiar calling features such as screen sharing, emoji reactions, favourites, and call history.
Rolling Out Gradually
Meta said the new calling features are being released in phases, meaning some users may receive them before others.
The company expects the rollout to reach all eligible WhatsApp users in the coming weeks.
