Joe Root has reached 23,000 international runs faster than Sachin Tendulkar, while his Test tally stands at 14,278 runs and his ODI career at 7,826 runs with 20 centuries.
England batter Joe Root has reached another major milestone in international cricket, becoming the second-fastest player to score 23,000 international runs.
Root reached the mark during England’s first ODI against Sri Lanka in Durham, getting the three runs he needed with a boundary.
The 35-year-old reached 23,000 international runs in his 521st innings, moving past India’s batting great Sachin Tendulkar, who reached the same milestone in 522 innings.
India’s Virat Kohli remains the fastest to 23,000 international runs, reaching the mark in 490 innings.
Root is the eighth batter overall and the first Englishman to cross 23,000 international runs.
Players to Score 23,000 International Runs
Root has now joined an exclusive group of batters who have accumulated at least 23,000 international runs.
The list includes:
- Virat Kohli
- Sachin Tendulkar
- Rahul Dravid
- Kumar Sangakkara
- Mahela Jayawardene
- Ricky Ponting
- Jacques Kallis
- Joe Root
The milestone adds another landmark to Root’s international career, which has already seen him become England’s leading run-scorer in both Test cricket and ODI cricket.
Root Continues to Close the Gap on Tendulkar
Root’s latest achievement comes as he continues to approach several of Tendulkar’s long-standing Test records.
Root currently has 14,278 Test runs, leaving him 1,643 runs short of Tendulkar’s record total of 15,921.
He has also already surpassed Tendulkar’s record for the most Test half-centuries.
Root is approaching the milestone while having played considerably fewer Test matches than Tendulkar. He is currently 31 Tests behind Tendulkar’s record of 200 Test appearances.
Root’s ODI Record Deserves More Attention
Root’s international achievements are often associated with his Test career, but his ODI numbers have also been significant.
He currently has 7,826 ODI runs and 20 centuries.
His ODI batting average is above 51, higher than his Test average, highlighting his consistency in England’s 50-over side.
Root is already England’s highest run-scorer in ODI cricket.
His ability to contribute heavily in both Test and ODI cricket has helped him become one of England’s most prolific international batters.
A New Milestone at 35
Root reached the 23,000-run mark at the age of 35, continuing a career that has already produced records across formats.
By reaching the milestone in 521 innings, he has now moved ahead of Tendulkar on the fastest-to-23,000 list.
Only Kohli reached the mark faster.
Root’s latest achievement also places him alongside seven other players who have crossed 23,000 international runs, making him the first Englishman to enter the group.
