Apple’s latest iPhone update brings Siri AI, smarter photo tools, faster apps, Liquid Glass improvements, and new safety features.
Apple has released iOS 27, bringing its biggest software focus yet on artificial intelligence, alongside a redesigned Liquid Glass experience, smarter Photos tools, performance improvements,s and new safety features.
The update became available on September 14 for compatible iPhones. While iOS 27 supports devices as old as the iPhone 11, some of its headline Apple Intelligence features require newer hardware.
The biggest change is Siri.
For years, Siri has mainly handled straightforward requests such as setting timers, sending messages or checking the weather. With iOS 27, Apple is turning Siri into a more capable AI assistant that can understand context, work across apps and respond to more natural requests.

Siri gets a major AI upgrade
Siri AI is the centrepiece of iOS 27.
Apple says the new Siri can understand personal context, recognise what’s happening on screen and take more actions across apps. Users can type to Siri or speak naturally, making the assistant feel less like a voice-command tool and more like an everyday digital assistant.
Siri can also help with tasks that involve multiple steps. For example, users can ask it to draft an email based on their availability and preferences rather than giving it a single isolated command.
Apple is also adding writing assistance. Siri can help improve text and adapt writing suggestions to the way users normally communicate with different people.
There is also a new Siri mode inside Camera, allowing users to ask questions about what they are looking at through the viewfinder.
Photos gets smarter editing tools.
Apple is expanding Apple Intelligence inside the Photos app.
One of the notable additions is Spatial Reframing, which gives users more control over how subjects are positioned within an image. Apple is also upgrading its Clean Up tool for removing unwanted elements from photos.
The idea is simple. Instead of opening a separate editing app for basic AI-powered changes, more of those tools are now built directly into Photos.
Liquid Glass gets a practical makeover.
Apple introduced Liquid Glass with its previous software generation, but iOS 27 refines the design.
Apple says the update improves readability contrasta, contrast, and visual consistency. App icons are also sharper and more defined.
More importantly, users now get a Liquid Glass slider in Settings. It allows them to adjust the interface from an ultra-clear appearance to a more heavily tinted look.
That gives users more control over an interface that some found difficult to read because of its transparency.
iOS 27 is faster
Apple has also focused heavily on performance.
According to Apple, app launches can be up to 30% faster, new photos can load in the Photos library up to 70% faster, and AirDrop transfers can be up to 80% faster.
That means even users who do not have access to the newest Apple Intelligence features could still notice improvements after installing iOS 27.
New safety tools for children
Apple is expanding its parental and child-safety features with iOS 27.
The new tools are designed to give parents more control over children’s digital experiences while making it easier for families to manage potentially inappropriate or risky online content.
Apple has made child safety one of the broader themes of its latest software updates across iPhone, iPad and other devices.
The compatibility catch
This is where iOS 27 gets slightly confusing.
iOS 27 itself supports the iPhone 11 and newer models. But the full Apple Intelligence experience is restricted to newer devices.
Apple currently lists Apple Intelligence and Siri AI support for the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, as well as iPhone 16 models and newer devices.
So an iPhone 11 user can install iOS 27, but will not get the same AI capabilities available on a newer iPhone.

Compatible iPhone users can install the update by going to:
Settings → General → Software Update
Because the update has just rolled out, availability can take some time to appear for every user.
What iOS 27 means for iPhone users
iOS 27 is more than another visual refresh.
Apple is using the update to push the iPhone further toward AI-assisted computing. Siri is the most visible part of that shift, but Apple Intelligence is also spreading into Photos, Camera, writing tools, and everyday system experiences.
At the same time, Apple has focused on something less flashy but just as important: making the operating system faster, easier to read, and more configurable.
For users with older compatible iPhones, iOS 27 still brings meaningful performance and interface improvements. For owners of newer Apple Intelligence-compatible models, however, the biggest change is clear.
Siri is no longer just the assistant you ask to set a timer. Apple wants it to become the assistant that understands what you’re trying to do.
