Google says its ecosystem has supported more than 960,000 jobs in Pakistan, while students will receive free one-year Gemini subscriptions.

Google has opened its first office in Pakistan, expanding its presence in a market the technology company has been working with for more than a decade.

The move comes as Pakistan seeks to build its technology sector and achieve its ambition of becoming a $30 billion IT export hub.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif unveiled the foundation plaque for Google’s new office in Islamabad, calling the development an important milestone in Pakistan’s digital transformation.

Google Says Its Ecosystem Supports 960,000 Jobs

Google said its ecosystem has supported more than 960,000 jobs in Pakistan, highlighting the company’s growing role in the country’s digital economy.

The company has invested in Pakistan for more than 10 years through products, digital skills programmes and support for businesses and developers.

The new office is expected to deepen that engagement and create additional opportunities for Pakistan’s young workforce.

Free Gemini Access for Students

As part of its latest expansion, Google will also provide Pakistani students with free one-year subscriptions to Gemini, its AI-powered assistant.

The initiative is aimed at giving students greater access to AI tools for learning, research and productivity as generative AI becomes increasingly important across education and employment.

For Pakistan, the programme also aligns with its broader push to develop digital skills among its large young population.

Pakistan’s $30 Billion IT Ambition

Pakistan is seeking to significantly increase its technology and IT exports, with the government targeting $30 billion in annual IT exports.

Google’s expansion comes against that backdrop, with the company positioning its Pakistan presence around digital skills, entrepreneurship and access to technology.

The opening of the Islamabad office marks a new phase in Google’s relationship with Pakistan, moving from programmes and digital products toward a more established local presence.

For Pakistan, the bigger objective is clear. Turning its young workforce into a globally competitive technology workforce will require investment in skills, infrastructure and access to the tools shaping the next generation of digital work.
