From his 25-year career at Apple to his $58 million pay package and hardware-focused vision, here are five things to know about John Ternus.

John Ternus is now the chief executive officer of Apple, taking over from Tim Cook on September 1, 2026, after more than 25 years at the company.

The leadership change marks the end of Cook’s 15-year tenure as CEO and puts Ternus in charge of Apple’s hardware, software, services and wider corporate operations. Cook has moved into the role of executive chairman.

Ternus arrives with deep experience inside Apple’s hardware organisation and a reputation for overseeing some of the company’s most important product development work. His appointment also comes at a crucial moment as Apple tries to strengthen its position in artificial intelligence while maintaining the product ecosystem that has driven its growth.

Here are five things to know about Apple’s new CEO.

1. Why John Ternus Was Chosen

Apple announced its succession plan in April 2026, naming Ternus as Cook’s successor.

Cook described him as a “visionary” whose contributions to Apple over more than 25 years made him the right person to lead the company into its next chapter. He also praised Ternus’s engineering background, innovation mindset, and leadership qualities.

For Apple, the appointment provides continuity. Ternus is a long-serving executive who has spent his entire career at the company and has worked closely with Cook.

Ternus said he intended to carry forward Apple’s values and vision while leading the company into its next phase.

His appointment also followed an internal and external succession process conducted by Apple’s board, rather than being an abrupt change in leadership.

2. He Has Spent His Entire Career at Apple

Ternus joined Apple’s product design team in 2001.

He became vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013 and joined the company’s executive team in 2021 as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. Before joining Apple, he worked as a mechanical engineer at Virtual Research Systems.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

During his Apple career, Ternus rose through the hardware organisation while becoming one of the executives most closely associated with the company’s product engineering strategy.

His experience is unusual among technology CEOs because he has spent virtually his entire senior career inside the same company and has worked across multiple generations of Apple’s products.

3. He Helped Shape Apple’s Hardware

Ternus has overseen hardware engineering across Apple’s major product categories, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPods.

Apple credits him with being instrumental in the introduction of the iPad and AirPods, as well as generations of other products. His responsibilities also covered the Mac’s transition to Apple silicon.

He has been closely involved in Apple’s focus on product reliability and durability and has helped drive innovations in materials and repairability.

Apple has highlighted examples including a recycled aluminium compound used across multiple products and the use of 3D-printed titanium in the Apple Watch Ultra.

Ternus’s hardware experience also gives him a particularly strong connection to the physical products that form the foundation of Apple’s ecosystem.

4. His Compensation Package Is Worth About $58 Million

Apple’s latest securities filing provides details of Ternus’s new compensation arrangement as CEO.

His annual salary was increased to $3 million, while Apple approved an annual equity award with a target value of $55 million for fiscal 2027. He also received a prorated restricted stock unit award with a target value of $2.5 million for his period as CEO during fiscal 2026.

That puts the headline value of the new CEO package at roughly $58 million, excluding the effect of future changes in the value of the stock awards.

The structure is also performance-oriented. Seventy-five percent of the $55 million annual equity award will be granted as performance-based restricted stock units tied to Apple’s total shareholder return relative to companies in the S&P 500. The remaining 25% will consist of time-based RSUs vesting over four years.

Cook’s new role as executive chairman comes with a $2 million annual salary and a separate equity package targeted at $45 million.

5. His Biggest Challenge Is Apple’s AI Strategy

Ternus takes over Apple at a very different technological moment from the one Cook inherited in 2011.

The central challenge is artificial intelligence.

Apple has invested heavily in Apple Intelligence and is increasingly integrating AI capabilities into its devices and operating systems. But the company has faced questions about the pace of its AI development compared with rivals building large models and AI-native products.

Ternus’s engineering background could shape how Apple responds.

His leadership experience is rooted in hardware, and he has spoken about the opportunity to drive Apple’s next era across creativity, productivity and customer experience through new software and hardware experiences.

Apple’s leadership transition also comes with a significant change in its hardware organisation. In April, Johny Srouji was elevated to chief hardware officer, taking responsibility for Hardware Engineering and the hardware technologies organisation that Ternus previously led.

That allows Ternus to move from directly running Apple’s hardware engineering organisation to leading the company as a whole.

What Stays the Same Under Ternus?

Ternus is expected to preserve several priorities established under Cook, including product durability, repairability, privacy and Apple’s environmental goals.

At the same time, his background points to a leadership style that may place greater emphasis on the relationship between hardware and emerging technologies.

Apple’s future product pipeline is widely watched for potential new categories and form factors, including devices that could make its AI capabilities more useful in everyday life.

That could make the interaction between Apple’s hardware, software, and AI strategy one of the defining themes of Ternus’s tenure.

From Hardware Chief to Apple’s Top Job

John Ternus’s rise is a distinctly Apple story.

He joined the company as an engineer in 2001, spent more than two decades working on its products, moved into senior leadership, and eventually became the person chosen to succeed one of the longest-serving CEOs in Apple’s history.

Now he has to make the transition from managing the engineering of Apple’s products to deciding where the entire company goes next.

Cook leaves behind a company with a market value that has risen dramatically during his tenure and an ecosystem spanning devices, services and software. Ternus inherits that scale, but also a new set of challenges around AI, competition and the next generation of computing.

His first major test will be turning his deep understanding of Apple’s products into a broader vision for what the company becomes next.
