The Berkshire Hathaway chairman says luck, timing, good health, and early exposure to investing played a bigger role in his success than most people realize.
Legendary investor Warren Buffett believes one of the biggest reasons behind his extraordinary success has little to do with stock picking.
Instead, he says it comes down to luck.
Speaking in a rare interview aired by CNBC, the Berkshire Hathaway chairman reflected on his life and career, describing himself as “one of the 10 luckiest people on Earth.”
Buffett Credits Luck Over Talent
Buffett said that among the world’s eight billion people, he considers himself exceptionally fortunate.
“Out of eight billion people, I may be one of the 10 luckiest in the world,” he said.
At 95, Buffett pointed to his health and longevity as two of the greatest gifts he has received.
While joking that he is now “losing marbles,” he added that he had the opportunity to “accumulate marbles for a longer time than I deserved,” describing it simply as good fortune.
Being Born at the Right Time Also Mattered
Beyond health, Buffett believes timing played a significant role in his career.
He said he was fortunate to discover a profession that perfectly matched both his interests and natural abilities.
Investing, he noted, happened to be one of the few fields where those talents could create extraordinary financial success.
Had his passion been something else, the outcome might have looked very different.
“I’ve been lucky that the thing I loved doing and happened to be good at was investing,” Buffett explained, adding that even being an exceptional violinist would not have produced the same financial opportunities.
Early Exposure Changed Everything
Buffett also acknowledged that his upbringing gave him an advantage many people never receive.
His father worked as a stockbroker, introducing him to investing at an early age.
Looking back, Buffett described that opportunity as an accident of birth rather than something he earned.
“If my father had been a plumber,” he said, “I would not have had the same advantage I had.”
That early exposure sparked a lifelong fascination with financial markets and ultimately laid the foundation for one of the most successful investing careers in history.
A Career Built on Opportunity and Discipline
Over several decades, Buffett transformed Berkshire Hathaway into one of the world’s most valuable companies and amassed a fortune approaching $150 billion, even after donating more than half of his Berkshire shares to charitable causes.
While his disciplined investment philosophy has made him one of history’s greatest investors, Buffett continues to emphasize that success is rarely the product of talent alone.
In his view, opportunity, timing, good health, supportive circumstances, and the people around us often shape outcomes just as much as hard work.
For one of the world’s most admired investors, acknowledging luck isn’t an act of humility alone. It’s a reminder that success is often built on factors beyond anyone’s control.
