From aviation safety updates and airline leadership changes to cargo expansion and the government’s clarification on ATF, here’s what happened this week.

India’s aviation sector saw a busy week, with leadership changes at the country’s two largest airlines, new safety disclosures in Parliament, a mid-air turbulence incident involving Air India, the launch of international cargo operations at Navi Mumbai Airport, and the government’s clarification that there are no plans to blend ethanol with aviation fuel.

Here’s a look at the biggest developments.

Air India and IndiGo Announce New CEOs

India’s two largest airlines unveiled major leadership changes this week.

Air India appointed Tewolde Gebremariam, the former chief executive of Ethiopian Airlines, as its new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, succeeding Campbell Wilson.

Meanwhile, Willie Walsh formally assumed charge as IndiGo’s CEO. Addressing employees, he said the airline’s “strongest days are ahead,” while acknowledging ongoing challenges such as global supply chain disruptions and evolving airspace restrictions.

Airlines Report 352 Significant Technical Defects

The government informed Parliament that airlines reported 352 significant technical defects between January and June 2026.

Of these, 334 were related to domestic operations and 18 involved international flights.

According to the data:

  • Akasa Air reported 152 significant defects.
  • Air India Express reported 53.
  • IndiGo reported 47.
  • Air India reported 46.

The government also disclosed that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued 382 show-cause notices for safety violations between January 2024 and June 2026, while taking 51 enforcement actions between 2023 and 2025.

Air India Flight Hits Severe Turbulence

An Air India flight travelling from Phuket to Delhi experienced severe turbulence on Tuesday, causing the aircraft to suddenly lose around 300 feet of altitude.

The incident injured 13 passengers and four crew members, although the aircraft landed safely in Delhi.

Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu later confirmed that the aircraft had been isolated for inspection. The flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder have been secured by the DGCA as investigators examine the incident.

The minister said the findings will be made public once the investigation is complete.

Government Rules Out Ethanol Blending in Aviation Fuel

The Civil Aviation Ministry dismissed claims that India plans to blend ethanol with Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF).

The clarification came after AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal alleged on social media that ethanol blending could compromise flight safety.

Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu called the claim “completely false and irresponsible,” explaining that ethanol and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) are entirely different fuels.

He added that SAF is internationally certified and complies with global aviation safety standards.

Navi Mumbai Airport Begins International Cargo Operations

Navi Mumbai International Airport marked an important milestone by handling its first international cargo flight on August 2.

The inaugural service, operated by IndiGo CarGo, connected Sharjah with Navi Mumbai and transported approximately 20 tonnes of cargo, including perishables and bonded transfer shipments originating from Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

The launch marks the beginning of the airport’s international cargo operations ahead of its broader commercial expansion.
