The successful launch of Vikram-1 marks a major milestone for India’s private space sector, making Skyroot the first private company to launch an orbital-class rocket.
Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace has successfully launched Vikram-1, becoming the first Indian private company to send an orbital-class rocket into space from Indian soil.
India’s private space industry reached a historic milestone on July 18 as Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, the country’s first privately developed orbital-class rocket.
The launch took place from ISRO’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, making Skyroot the first private Indian company to build and launch a complete orbital-capable launch vehicle.
The mission, named Aagaman, meaning “arrival,” marks a significant step in India’s growing commercial space ambitions and highlights the expanding role of private companies in the country’s space programme.
Historic Launch After Brief Delay
Vikram-1 was originally scheduled to lift off at 11:30 AM, but the launch was delayed by around 35 minutes following what officials described as a planned pause.
The rocket eventually lifted off at 12:05 PM, successfully beginning its mission from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.
Until now, only the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had launched orbital-class rockets from India, making Skyroot’s achievement a landmark moment for the country’s private aerospace sector.
Advanced Technology Powers Vikram-1
Beyond its historic significance, Vikram-1 also showcases several technological breakthroughs developed in India.
The four-stage launch vehicle is built almost entirely from carbon composite materials, making it significantly lighter than conventional metal-based rockets while maintaining high structural strength.
Its first stage is reported to be the longest monolithic carbon composite rocket stage ever manufactured in India, reflecting major advances in domestic aerospace manufacturing.
The rocket also features a fully 3D-printed liquid engine in its Orbital Adjustment Module, demonstrating how advanced manufacturing technologies are becoming part of operational space missions.
More Than a Technology Demonstration
Alongside its technology payloads, Vikram-1 carried several symbolic items celebrating India’s achievements in science and space exploration.
Among them was a commemorative card bearing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message, “Vande Mataram,” along with dozens of messages and wishes submitted by people from around the world.
The mission also included a miniature gold rocket containing micro sculptures of three iconic Indian scientists and visionaries:
- Dr Vikram Sarabhai, regarded as the father of India’s space programme.
- Sir C.V. Raman, Nobel Prize-winning physicist.
- Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India and renowned aerospace scientist.
These tributes reflected the country’s scientific heritage while celebrating a new chapter in its space journey.
A New Era for India’s Private Space Industry
Skyroot’s successful launch demonstrates how India’s space ecosystem has evolved since the sector was opened to private participation.
While Indian startups have previously developed rocket engines, components, and satellite technologies, Vikram-1 is the first fully integrated orbital-class rocket designed and built by a private Indian company.
The achievement is expected to encourage greater investment in commercial space ventures, strengthen India’s launch capabilities, and create new opportunities for private innovation in the global space industry.
With the successful launch of Mission Aagaman, Skyroot Aerospace has taken a significant step toward establishing India as a major player in the rapidly growing commercial space economy.
