Reddit CEO Eyes AI-Native Talent, Plans Increased Graduate Hiring

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman says he plans to hire new grads even though AI can already do a lot of entry-level work.

As concerns grow that artificial intelligence could reduce opportunities for entry-level workers, Reddit is taking a different position.

CEO Steve Huffman has indicated that the company intends to significantly increase hiring of recent college graduates, particularly those who have developed skills in programming alongside AI tools.

This perspective runs counter to broader industry warnings that automation could eliminate a substantial share of early-career roles.

The Rise of AI-Native Talent

Huffman’s argument is grounded in a shift already visible in the talent pipeline.

New graduates are entering the workforce having learned to code in environments shaped by AI assistance, making them more adaptable to emerging development workflows. Rather than replacing these roles, AI is redefining the skill set required to perform them effectively.

For companies building new products, this creates a different hiring priority. Instead of reducing headcount, organizations may seek individuals who are already aligned with AI-driven ways of working.

Productivity Does Not Mean Fewer Jobs

A key assumption being challenged is that higher productivity automatically leads to fewer employees.

Huffman suggests the opposite. If AI enables engineers to become significantly more productive, the logical outcome is not downsizing but expansion, with teams able to build more products and features within the same timeframe.

This reflects a growth-oriented interpretation of AI adoption, where efficiency gains are reinvested into output rather than cost reduction alone.

Competition for Early Talent

The emphasis on new graduates also introduces a competitive dynamic.

Huffman noted that top candidates entering the workforce may quickly become inaccessible once hired, as their value increases within organizations. This creates urgency for companies to secure talent early rather than waiting for experienced hires to re-enter the market.

A Complex Hiring Environment

The strategy emerges against a mixed backdrop.

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows a slight rise in unemployment, while hiring in parts of the tech sector has slowed. At the same time, leaders such as Dario Amodei have warned that AI could significantly reduce entry-level white-collar roles over the next decade.

These contrasting signals highlight an inflection point rather than a clear trend.

Redefining Entry-Level Work

Reddit’s approach suggests that entry-level roles are not disappearing but evolving.

The distinction is no longer based solely on experience, but on familiarity with new tools, adaptability, and the ability to operate in AI-augmented environments.

For companies continuing to build and expand, this shift may increase, rather than decrease, the strategic importance of early-career talent.
