The rooftop solar startup has secured backing from MS Dhoni, who says clean energy is key to India’s future growth.

The rooftop solar startup has secured backing from MS Dhoni, who says clean energy will play a defining role in India’s future while supporting the company’s next phase of growth.

Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has invested in residential rooftop solar startup SolarSquare through his family office, Midas Deals, joining the company’s recently announced $53 million Series C funding round.

As part of the partnership, Dhoni has also been named an investor and brand ambassador for the Mumbai-based clean energy company. The financial details of his investment have not been disclosed.

Dhoni Backs India’s Clean Energy Future

Explaining his decision to invest, Dhoni said the partnership goes beyond financial returns and reflects his belief in India’s long-term energy transition.

“For me, this is much bigger than investing in a company. It’s about investing in India’s future. Energy security and clean energy are priorities that will define India’s next decade, and residential solar has an important role to play.”

He added that the founders’ long-term vision and commitment to building the business gave him confidence to join the company as both an investor and brand ambassador.

SolarSquare Welcomes Dhoni

SolarSquare Co-founder and CEO Shreya Mishra said Dhoni’s reputation for trust and leadership aligns closely with the company’s mission.

“We are honoured to welcome MS Dhoni as an investor and brand ambassador at SolarSquare. Over two decades, he has held the trust and expectations of a billion Indians, and that is exactly the benchmark of trust we want to build with our customers.”

She added that Dhoni’s commitment to India’s future and climate goals made him a natural fit for the brand.

$53 Million Series C Funding

Dhoni’s investment forms part of SolarSquare’s $53 million Series C funding round, led by B Capital.

Existing investors, including Lightspeed, Elevation Capital, Lowercarbon Capital, Rainmatter by Zerodha, and Good Capital, also participated in the round.

The latest raise brings SolarSquare’s total funding to more than $100 million since its inception.

Expanding Residential Solar Across India

Founded in 2015 by Neeraj Jain, Shreya Mishra, and Nikhil Nahar, SolarSquare provides end-to-end residential rooftop solar solutions, including consultation, system design, financing assistance, installation, and long-term maintenance.

The company says it has installed rooftop solar systems for nearly 50,000 homes across 29 cities in nine Indian states.

With the new funding, SolarSquare plans to expand into 30 to 40 additional cities, strengthen its technology platform, hire more talent, and broaden its residential energy offerings.

Future services are expected to include battery storage, home energy management solutions, and additional financing options for homeowners.

India’s Rooftop Solar Market Continues to Grow

Demand for residential rooftop solar has increased steadily as households seek to reduce electricity costs and benefit from government incentives.

A major driver of this growth is the PM Surya Ghar scheme, launched in 2024, which aims to support rooftop solar installations at 10 million Indian households by March 2027.

With increasing policy support and rising consumer awareness, India’s residential solar sector is expected to remain one of the country’s fastest-growing clean energy markets.

Dhoni’s investment reflects growing confidence in that opportunity, as SolarSquare looks to accelerate its expansion and help make rooftop solar more accessible to homeowners across India.
