LinkedIn’s CEO Ryan Roslansky frames the future of work as a present reality.
AI is expanding its capabilities, but it is also exposing a gap. Technical tools are advancing faster than human adaptation.
The advantage is not in competing with AI. It is in strengthening what AI cannot replace.
The Five Capabilities That Matter
LinkedIn defines five core human capabilities, referred to as the 5Cs. These are not soft skills. They are decision-making inputs that shape how work is approached and executed.
Curiosity
Curiosity determines direction.
AI can generate answers, but it does not decide which questions are worth asking.
This capability drives exploration, learning, and alignment between personal interest and professional path. Without it, work becomes reactive rather than intentional.
Courage
Courage determines movement.
AI can assess probability, but it cannot choose uncertainty.
Acting without full information, challenging assumptions, and making decisions under ambiguity define progress in environments where certainty no longer exists.
Creativity
Creativity determines differentiation.
AI can recombine existing data, but it does not originate meaning.
The ability to reimagine problems and design new responses separates execution from innovation. This applies across roles, not only in traditionally creative fields.
Compassion
Compassion determines connection.
AI can simulate responses, but it does not experience them.
Understanding people, responding to context, and building trust transform systems into relationships. This capability influences leadership, teamwork, and long-term outcomes.
Communication
Communication determines impact.
AI can structure language, but it does not create shared understanding.
The ability to translate ideas into clarity, align perspectives, and navigate complexity defines whether work scales or fails.
Current Direction
The value structure of work is shifting.
Technical capability is becoming widespread. Human capability is becoming the differentiator.
The 5Cs are not complementary skills. They are the core infrastructure for operating in an environment shaped by AI.
