A Dream That Started at Home

For more than a decade, Sanam Gill dedicated her time to raising her family in Dubai.

As a mother of three, her days revolved around school runs, family responsibilities, and creating a home for her children. Entrepreneurship was not necessarily part of the plan. Yet after spending 12 years focused on family life, she felt ready to challenge herself in a new way.

“I wanted to show my kids that Mommy can do more than just being a mom,” Gill says.

That decision would eventually lead to the launch of Mama Thai, an independent restaurant located inside Dubai’s Neighborhood Food Hall. What began as a personal passion has since evolved into a growing business that brings authentic Thai flavors to diners across the city.

A Lifelong Connection to Thai Cuisine

For Gill, opening a Thai restaurant was never a random business decision.

Born and raised in Singapore, she spent much of her childhood traveling throughout Thailand with her family. Destinations such as Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Samui, and Krabi became familiar places that shaped her appreciation for Thai culture and cuisine.

“If I had to choose one last meal, it would be Thai food,” she says.

Over the years, Thai cuisine became more than a favorite cuisine. It became part of her identity and some of her happiest memories.

That connection grew even stronger after she met her husband. The couple married in Bangkok more than a decade ago, making Thailand an important chapter in their family story.

“I wanted to bring a piece of that to Dubai. Thailand is where my husband and I began our journey together,” she explains.

Why Dubai Felt Like the Right Place

Although Singapore remains her birthplace, Gill considers Dubai home.

Having lived in the UAE for more than 12 years, she has witnessed firsthand how the city encourages entrepreneurship and supports people willing to take risks.

According to the Dubai Chamber of Commerce, thousands of new businesses are registered annually in the emirate, reflecting its position as one of the world’s most dynamic startup and business hubs.

For Gill, Dubai’s culture of opportunity played a major role in giving her the confidence to pursue her idea.

“I had my three children here. Dubai is a city that encourages people to step out of their comfort zone and turn their vision into reality,” she says.

That entrepreneurial spirit became the foundation of Mama Thai.

Building Mama Thai

Launching a restaurant is never easy.

The food and beverage industry is known for long hours, operational challenges, and intense competition. Yet Gill remained committed to one principle: authenticity.

Rather than adapting recipes heavily for local tastes, she wanted the restaurant to stay true to the flavors she had grown up loving.

A key part of achieving that goal has been her partnership with Head Chef Nok, who comes from Bangkok and brings years of experience preparing traditional Thai cuisine.

Together, they developed a menu focused on authenticity while maintaining the welcoming atmosphere that Gill envisioned for the brand.

The result is a restaurant that serves classic Thai dishes while creating an experience rooted in hospitality and cultural appreciation.

More Than Just a Restaurant

Mama Thai reflects more than Thai cuisine. It reflects Dubai itself.

A Singaporean entrepreneur running a Thai restaurant in the UAE is a story that mirrors the city’s multicultural identity.

“Our team comes from different cultures and backgrounds, but together we work beautifully as one,” Gill says.

That diversity has become one of the restaurant’s greatest strengths. Customers experience not only authentic food but also the collaboration of people from different parts of the world working toward a common goal.

For Gill, this spirit of inclusion represents one of the reasons she loves living and building a business in Dubai.

The Meaning Behind the Name

The restaurant’s name carries special significance.

“I called it Mama Thai because it resonates with who I am. I’m a mum of three, and I believe mums make the best meals,” Gill says.

The name reflects both her role as a mother and her belief that food creates connection.

Throughout history, some of the most memorable meals have come not from professional kitchens but from family tables where recipes are passed down through generations.

Gill wanted Mama Thai to capture that same feeling.

Lessons in Taking a Leap

Opening Mama Thai required stepping into unfamiliar territory.

For someone who had spent years focused on family life, becoming a business owner meant learning new skills, making difficult decisions, and embracing uncertainty.

Yet the experience reinforced an important lesson.

Success does not always come from following a predetermined path. Sometimes it comes from permitting yourself to pursue something you’ve always loved.

For Gill, that meant turning a lifelong passion for Thai food into a business.

For her children, it became a lesson in courage, persistence, and believing that new chapters can begin at any stage of life.

Future Outlook

Today, Mama Thai continues to grow within Dubai’s competitive food scene.

Supported by a loyal customer base and a strong community of independent operators at Neighborhood Food Hall, the restaurant has become more than a business. It has become a reflection of Gill’s journey from homemaker to entrepreneur.

Looking back, she sees Mama Thai as the intersection of family, culture, and ambition.

It is a place inspired by childhood memories in Southeast Asia, built in the city she calls home, and shaped by a desire to show her children that dreams remain worth pursuing.

In many ways, Mama Thai is not just a restaurant.

It is proof that sometimes the most meaningful ventures begin with a simple decision to believe in yourself.
