Abu Dhabi’s Dr. Ahmed Al Neyadi draws inspiration from astronaut-minister Dr. Sultan Al Neyadi.
The UAE marked Emirati Doctors’ Day on March 11, celebrating the contributions of Emirati physicians who serve across the country’s healthcare system.
Among them is Dr. Ahmed Al Neyadi, a consultant in ophthalmology and refractive surgery at Burjeel Medical City in Abu Dhabi.
Dr. Al Neyadi represents a growing generation of Emirati doctors bringing advanced training and expertise to the nation’s healthcare sector.
Inspired by a National Figure
Dr. Al Neyadi says one of his greatest sources of inspiration is Dr. Sultan Al Neyadi, the Emirati astronaut who completed a record-setting 186-day mission aboard the International Space Station in 2023.
Dr. Sultan Al Neyadi also became the first Arab astronaut to perform a spacewalk and later assumed the role of UAE Minister of State for Youth Affairs in 2024.
For Dr. Ahmed Al Neyadi, seeing someone from his extended family and community achieve global recognition has been deeply motivating.
“The achievement of Sultan is an achievement for all of us,” he said.
Choosing a Career in Medicine
Dr. Ahmed Al Neyadi decided to pursue medicine during his school years.
He was drawn to a profession built on knowledge, compassion, and service. His interest eventually led him to ophthalmology, a field that combines surgical precision with the ability to restore vision.
Helping patients regain clear sight, he said, remains one of the most fulfilling aspects of his work.
Education Supported by the UAE
Dr. Al Neyadi completed parts of his education and medical training abroad, including in Ireland and Germany.
He credits the UAE’s strong investment in education for providing the opportunity to study internationally and return with specialized expertise.
Serving Patients and Country
Working in the UAE’s modern healthcare environment allows doctors to apply advanced technologies and treatments.
For Dr. Ahmed Al Neyadi, each successful treatment represents a contribution to the well-being of the community.
“Every time I help a patient improve their vision, I feel I am contributing to the health of our society,” he said.
Encouraging Future Doctors
Dr. Al Neyadi hopes more young Emiratis will pursue careers in medicine.
He says the profession demands dedication and lifelong learning, but it also offers a powerful sense of purpose.
For those willing to commit to the journey, he believes medicine remains one of the most meaningful ways to serve both people and country.
