The proposal comes as Donald Trump considers replacing TSA agents with ICE personnel at US airports.
Against this backdrop, Elon Musk has offered to personally fund salaries for Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers during the ongoing government funding impasse, as airport disruptions intensify across the United States.
In a post on X, Musk said he is willing to cover TSA payroll temporarily, pointing to the growing impact on travelers facing long security lines and operational delays.
Shutdown Strains Airport Operations
Meanwhile, the TSA, which operates under the Department of Homeland Security, has been affected by the partial government shutdown that began in late January.
Currently, around 50,000 TSA officers are working without pay, with reports indicating absentee rates have climbed to 10% nationwide and as high as 20% at some major airports.
As a result, extended wait times—sometimes stretching to several hours—are disrupting normal airport operations due to staffing shortages.
Trump Suggests Replacing TSA With ICE
At the same time, Trump has increased pressure on lawmakers by proposing a controversial alternative.
In another social media post, he suggested that TSA agents could be replaced with personnel from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) if Congress fails to resolve the funding deadlock.
Overall, the proposal highlights mounting frustration within the administration as the shutdown continues to affect national security functions and public services.
Legal Barriers to Private Funding
Despite Musk’s high-profile offer, such a move is not legally feasible.
Federal salaries can only be paid through government-authorized funding channels, and agencies are not permitted to accept private funds to cover payroll expenses.
This makes Musk’s proposal symbolic rather than actionable, underscoring the urgency of resolving the funding crisis through legislative means.
Pressure Mounts on Congress
With rising absenteeism, operational strain at airports, and broader geopolitical tensions adding pressure, lawmakers face increasing urgency to reach an agreement.
The situation highlights how prolonged funding disputes can quickly translate into real-world disruptions, affecting both national infrastructure and everyday travel.
