The upgraded Alexa supports natural conversations in English, Hindi and Hinglish, while adding smart home controls, shopping, meal planning, entertainment and family-focused features.
Amazon has launched Alexa+ in India, bringing its next-generation voice assistant to one of Alexa’s largest and most diverse language markets.
Introduced in India on September 16, Alexa+ is designed to handle more natural conversations and perform a wider range of tasks. The assistant supports English, Hindi and Hinglish, while also offering features for smart home control, shopping, meal planning, restaurant reservations, music and entertainment.
Amazon says its India team played a major role in developing the local speech technology and testing Alexa+’s capabilities for Indian users.
Alexa+ Brings a More Natural Conversational Experience
Unlike the traditional voice-assistant experience, Alexa+ is built to handle multi-turn conversations. Users can continue speaking with Alexa without repeating the wake word after every request.
Amazon International Vice President Michele Butti said Alexa+ was built differently from simply adding generative AI features to the existing Alexa.
According to Butti, the assistant uses multiple models for different tasks rather than relying on a single large language model. Amazon says this architecture allows Alexa+ to handle a broader range of requests and take action on behalf of users.
The company describes Alexa+ as a new system built from the ground up rather than simply an upgrade to the original Alexa.
Alexa+ Adds Stronger Support for Indian Languages
One of the key features for the Indian market is Alexa+’s ability to communicate naturally in English, Hindi and Hinglish.
The language support is particularly relevant in India, where users frequently switch between English and Indian languages during everyday conversations.
Amazon says its Indian team contributed to the speech technology behind Alexa+ and helped test the experience for local users.
The assistant can also connect with services and devices that users already rely on, allowing them to manage tasks beyond basic voice searches.
Amazon Focuses on Kids and Parental Controls
Amazon has placed particular emphasis on making Alexa+ suitable for families with children.
Teena Sidana, Country Manager for Alexa in India, said the company has focused on creating an experience that can adapt to a child’s age and encourage conceptual learning.
Alexa+ can also interact with children through quizzes and other learning-oriented experiences.
Parents get additional controls to manage how Alexa is used by children. Amazon says these settings are designed to give parents greater control over the experience and make Alexa+ more suitable for family use.
The focus on child-friendly features is also part of Amazon’s broader effort to make Alexa+ useful beyond traditional smart-home commands.
Alexa+ Goes Beyond Smart Home Controls
Alexa+ can handle a broader set of everyday activities, according to Amazon.
Users can ask the assistant to control compatible smart-home devices, help with shopping, plan meals, make restaurant reservations, discover music, and access entertainment.
This expands Alexa’s role from a voice-controlled device to an assistant that can coordinate different tasks and services.
Its multi-turn conversation capability also means users can continue a discussion or refine a request without starting from the beginning each time.
Privacy and User Controls Remain Central
Amazon says privacy and user control remain important parts of the Alexa+ experience.
Alexa devices process interactions locally while remaining in standby until the wake word is detected. When Alexa is actively listening, a blue light indicates that the device is listening.
Users can also access the Alexa Privacy Dashboard to review their interactions, manage recordings, and control their data.
The blue indicator remains active while Alexa is listening and switches off when the interaction ends.
Alexa+ Pricing in India
Alexa+ is initially available to eligible users through an Early Access programme, where Amazon says it will use customer feedback to improve the experience.
Amazon says Alexa+ will remain available at no additional charge for Prime members.
For non-Prime customers, as well as Prime Lite and Prime Shopping Edition subscribers, Alexa+ is available separately for ₹2,000 per month or through eligible Prime subscription options, according to the company.
With Alexa+, Amazon is positioning its voice assistant as a more conversational and action-oriented service for Indian households, combining multilingual support with smart-home controls, shopping, entertainment and family-focused features.
