‘Al Amal – The Hope’ aims to promote well-being and reduce anxiety among schoolchildren.

Innovation often begins with a personal experience. For 12-year-old Nakshatra Prem, a student at Abu Dhabi Indian School, it began with a moment of fear.

After hearing emergency alerts for the first time amid regional tensions, the Grade 7 student found herself feeling anxious and unsettled. As she spoke with friends and classmates, she discovered she was not alone. Many students were experiencing similar feelings of uncertainty and stress.

Instead of simply accepting those emotions, Nakshatra decided to build a solution.

The result was Al Amal, The Hope, a mobile application designed to support students’ emotional well-being during stressful situations and help them feel safer, calmer, and more informed.

Turning Anxiety Into Action

Born and raised in the UAE, Nakshatra says she has always viewed the country as a place of safety and stability. However, recent emergency alerts created a level of uncertainty she had never experienced before.

“I panicked when I first heard the alerts. It was something I had never experienced before, and it made me very worried,” she explained.

As conversations with classmates revealed that many students shared the same concerns, she began thinking about how technology could be used to provide reassurance and support.

“I wanted to do something that could help students feel calm and reassured. I also wanted my computer skills to bring a positive change to the community,” she said.

Building Al Amal, The Hope

Nakshatra started developing the application on March 7 and completed the first version within just eight days.

Despite her age, this was not her first technology project. She had previously developed Star Tech Kidz, a platform that allows children to showcase their talents and creative abilities.

Her latest project focuses on mental wellness and practical support.

The app includes:

  • Calming guidance for stressful situations
  • Quick access to emergency contact numbers
  • Positive and reassuring messages
  • Personal safety notes and preparedness information

The goal is simple: help students feel more in control and less overwhelmed during uncertain moments.

The app’s visual identity also reflects its purpose. Its logo features a heart in soothing colors alongside a childlike figure symbolizing care, safety, hope, and emotional support.

Positive Response From Students

After completing the application, Nakshatra shared it with fellow students and collected feedback from early users.

The response, she says, has been encouraging.

Many students reported feeling more secure and less anxious after using the app, particularly during periods when emergency alerts created concern among young people.

“They told me using Al Amal, The Hope helped them feel more secure and less anxious, especially during the emergency alerts,” she said.

For Nakshatra, that feedback confirmed the value of creating technology that addresses real-life challenges faced by students.

Technology With a Purpose

The story of Al Amal, The Hope highlights how young innovators are increasingly using technology to address social and emotional challenges, not just technical ones.

While many student projects focus on entertainment or learning, Nakshatra chose to focus on mental well-being, an area receiving growing attention among educators, parents, and health professionals worldwide.

Her initiative demonstrates how even simple digital tools can provide comfort, reassurance, and practical support when people feel uncertain.

Inspiring Young Innovators

Currently available free of charge for Android users, Al Amal, The Hope reflects a broader lesson about innovation: age is not a barrier to creating meaningful impact.

At just 12 years old, Nakshatra Prem identified a challenge affecting her peers and used her skills to address it.

Her project serves as a reminder that some of the most powerful ideas come from understanding a problem firsthand and being willing to take action.

For Nakshatra, the goal remains straightforward.

“I want students to feel that they are safe and to not fear or worry.”

Through Al Amal, The Hope, she is already helping make that vision a reality for students across her community.

At just 12 years old, Nakshatra Prem has independently developed and published a fully functional mobile app
