The strike hit ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s hometown, killing two people and injuring 14.
New Delhi: A Russian missile strike hit Lakshmi Mittal-backed ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine’s largest steel plant, killing two people and injuring 14 workers, according to reports.
The plant is located in Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The attack damaged key production facilities and forced the partial suspension of operations.
Steel plant production disrupted.
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih said the strike damaged facilities connected to power generation and blast-furnace operations.
“As a result of the attack, key production facilities in the power generation and blast furnace sectors have been damaged,” the company said, adding that production processes had been partially halted.
The damage could have a significant impact on operations because the steel plant depends heavily on stable electricity and supporting infrastructure to maintain its production processes.
Russia-Ukraine strikes intensify
The strike came amid a fresh escalation in long-range attacks between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides targeting energy, industrial and military infrastructure.
Zelenskyy said Russia had launched more than 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided aerial bombs and 62 missiles against Ukrainian cities over the previous week.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said the metallurgical plant in Kryvyi Rih was among the targets, along with military-industrial facilities in Kyiv. Russian authorities also claimed that 822 Ukrainian drones had been intercepted during the latest wave of attacks.
The claims from both sides could not be independently verified.
Impact on Ukraine’s industrial sector
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is one of Ukraine’s most important industrial facilities and forms part of global steelmaker ArcelorMittal.
The latest strike adds to the pressure on Ukraine’s industrial sector, which has faced repeated attacks since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Damage to the plant’s power-generation and blast-furnace infrastructure could further affect production and industrial activity in Kryvyi Rih, particularly as the conflict continues to disrupt critical infrastructure across Ukraine.
