Flipkart Plans Food Delivery Service to Take on Zomato and Swiggy

The move will pit Flipkart against market leaders Zomato and Swiggy in India’s fast-growing food delivery sector.

Walmart-owned Flipkart is preparing to enter India’s highly competitive food delivery market, setting up a direct challenge to industry leaders Zomato and Swiggy.

The company plans to launch its new food delivery service within the next few weeks, beginning with a pilot programme before deciding on a nationwide expansion.

The move marks Flipkart’s latest push beyond traditional online shopping as it continues building a broader digital ecosystem for Indian consumers.

Pilot Launch Before Wider Expansion

Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy confirmed that the company will roll out the service in the coming weeks.

Rather than launching nationwide immediately, Flipkart will first test the platform, gather customer feedback and refine the experience before expanding to more cities.

“We will launch food delivery in the next few weeks,” Krishnamurthy said.

The company believes the pilot will help improve service quality, restaurant selection and operational efficiency before a larger rollout.

Available Through the Flipkart App

Flipkart plans to integrate food delivery into its main shopping app while also testing a dedicated standalone food delivery application.

The company has not yet revealed the service’s name, its launch city or details about its delivery model.

Instead of competing purely on discounts, Flipkart says it will focus on providing a reliable customer experience, a strong restaurant catalogue and dependable delivery services.

Krishnamurthy said the platform’s restaurant network will continue expanding as the service grows.

Challenging Zomato and Swiggy

Flipkart enters a market long dominated by Zomato-owned Zomato and Swiggy, which together control most of India’s online food delivery business.

Competition has intensified in recent months as companies experiment with new formats to attract customers.

Ride-hailing platform Rapido has introduced its Ownly food delivery service, while Swiggy recently launched Toing, targeting more value-conscious users.

Flipkart’s entry is expected to increase competition further as companies compete on restaurant partnerships, delivery speed, customer experience and pricing.

Part of a Bigger Growth Strategy

Food delivery is the latest addition to Flipkart’s expanding portfolio of consumer services.

The company entered the quick commerce segment with the launch of Flipkart Minutes in August 2024. By June 2026, Flipkart said Minutes had expanded to 1,000 micro-fulfilment centres serving more than 130 cities and 8,000 postcode areas across India.

Beyond e-commerce, the Flipkart Group also operates fashion platform Myntra, travel booking service Cleartrip and fintech business super. money.

Adding food delivery further strengthens its ambition to become a one-stop digital platform offering shopping, travel, financial services, quick commerce and now restaurant deliveries.

Outlook

Flipkart’s move into food delivery brings another major player into one of India’s fastest-growing digital markets.

While Zomato and Swiggy remain the established leaders, Flipkart’s large customer base, logistics network and expanding ecosystem could make it a formidable competitor as it looks to gain a share of the country’s rapidly growing food delivery industry.
