Deepinder Goyal has expanded into aerospace and defense technology through LAT Aerospace’s acquisition of Sharang Shakti, an early-stage defense robotics startup based in Gurugram.
LAT Aerospace, which Goyal founded alongside former Zomato COO Surobhi Das, will use the acquisition to build in-house capabilities in sensing, navigation, guidance, and control systems. The company plans to deploy this shared technology stack across both defense and civil aviation programs over time.
Building Indigenous Capabilities
In a post on X, Goyal described the acquisition as LAT Aerospace’s first step toward developing indigenous defense capabilities while pursuing its broader goal of creating next-generation civil aviation platforms from India.
He emphasized that civil aviation and defense often appear separate but rely on the same core technologies. Autonomy, perception systems, guidance logic, and flight control architectures power both unmanned defense platforms and advanced civilian aircraft.
By integrating Sharang Shakti into LAT Aerospace, the company aims to design these systems from first principles rather than depend on external vendors.
A Shift After Zomato
Last month, Goyal stepped down as Managing Director and Group CEO of Eternal, the parent entity of Zomato and Blinkit. He cited a desire to pursue higher-risk exploration and experimentation. The board appointed him Vice Chairman of Eternal following his resignation.
The acquisition signals a decisive move into deep technology sectors that demand long development cycles and significant capital commitment.
LAT Aerospace’s Broader Mission
Founded in January 2025, LAT Aerospace focuses on developing Short Take-Off and Landing aircraft designed to operate from compact air-stops rather than traditional airports. These STOL platforms aim to improve regional connectivity and enable operations in constrained environments.
By adding defense robotics expertise, LAT Aerospace strengthens its internal capabilities in autonomous systems and advanced flight technologies. The overlap between unmanned defense robotics and next-generation aircraft allows the company to create a unified technology foundation.
With this acquisition, Goyal positions LAT Aerospace at the intersection of aviation and defense, betting that shared engineering platforms will unlock long-term scale in both sectors.
