John Tarantino built a career on preparation, ethics, and the power of persuasion. For decades, he stood in courtrooms as one of America’s most respected trial lawyers. Today, he stands in laboratories, boardrooms, and global forums with a different purpose. He is working to change the future of cancer care.
The turning point was not professional. It was deeply personal.
A Career Defined by Discipline and Principle
Raised in Providence, Rhode Island, Tarantino once dreamed of becoming a major league baseball player. When that path proved unrealistic, he turned toward law, drawn by the example of principled advocates who combined intellect with integrity.
He graduated from Dartmouth in three years, worked to finance his legal education, and went on to build a distinguished career. As a shareholder and longtime President of Adler Pollock & Sheehan P.C., he earned national recognition within the legal community.
He was inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers, the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, and the International Society of Barristers. He authored 11 books and more than 200 articles, shaping conversations in legal scholarship and advocacy.
His professional trajectory was steady, accomplished, and respected.
Alongside that career, he built a life with his wife, Pat. They married one year after meeting at a job interview and spent 45 years together, raising three children and welcoming four grandchildren.
The Diagnosis That Changed Everything
In April 2021, Pat was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer. The prognosis offered little hope.
Tarantino stepped away from his legal practice to care for her full-time. For a year, his focus narrowed to treatment decisions, hospital visits, and the daily realities of a devastating illness. Pat passed away on April 16, 2022.
Before her death, they made a deliberate decision. They committed proceeds from her life insurance policies and the sale of their home to cancer research. If she could not survive, they wanted others to have a better chance.
That decision redirected his life.
Immersing Himself in Oncology
After Pat’s passing, Tarantino immersed himself in the science of cancer treatment. He studied emerging therapies, precision oncology, and the evolving landscape of targeted medicine. His legal training in analysis and preparation now served a different field.
In 2023, he became CEO of Iylon Precision Oncology, a company focused on advancing next-generation cancer solutions. He also assumed the role of Managing Trustee of the Papitto Opportunity Connection, a foundation supporting underserved communities through grants in education, healthcare, housing, entrepreneurship, and criminal justice reform.
Working alongside cancer researcher Dr. Sendurai Mani, he helped establish the Iylon Foundation to provide precision oncology services to patients who could not otherwise afford them. He also created the John and Pat Tarantino Charitable Foundation, dedicated exclusively to funding research and treatment for pancreatic and other aggressive cancers.
His efforts combine philanthropy, strategy, and operational leadership.
A Public Voice for Purpose
Tarantino’s advocacy now extends well beyond research institutions. In parallel with his philanthropic work, he has emerged as a prominent public speaker, sharing a deeply personal story shaped by loss, responsibility, and renewed purpose.
This message has resonated widely. His TEDx talk Redemption Stories became the most-viewed TEDx presentation globally in 2023, reaching more than 26 million viewers. He followed this with his 2025 talk, You Only Have One Life… Until You Have Another, which has drawn millions more views and expanded his global audience.
As demand for his perspective has grown, Tarantino now speaks regularly at corporations, professional associations, and international forums. His talks centre on resilience, mission-driven leadership, and the urgent need to accelerate medical innovation.
Looking ahead, his speaking platform continues to expand. On December 6, 2025, he is scheduled to deliver the keynote address, The Enemy of My Enemy, at the Forttuna Global Excellence Awards in Dubai.
In many ways, his voice has found a new arena. Once honed to persuade juries, it now carries a different message, a call for urgency in confronting one of medicine’s most lethal diseases.
A Mission Grounded in Commitment
Despite his expanding global role, Tarantino’s motivation remains deeply personal. At the heart of his mission lies urgency. Pancreatic cancer is still one of the deadliest forms of the disease, with survival rates that have improved only marginally over the decades.
For Tarantino, this reality sharpens focus rather than deters it. He has repeatedly emphasised that his work is not about recognition, but responsibility. He wants to drive meaningful advances in treatment and hopes to witness the day when pancreatic cancer becomes manageable — and ultimately curable.
Until then, his commitment remains unwavering. He continues to invest his time, energy, and resources into accelerating research and innovation.
In many ways, his journey represents evolution, not departure. John Tarantino’s story is not about stepping away from a successful legal career; it is about extending its purpose. The advocacy skills that once defined him in the courtroom now power his fight against cancer. The mission that guides him began with love, and it continues with resolve.
