Dubai: Arijit Singh, one of Bollywood’s most influential playback singers, has announced that he will no longer take on new film singing assignments, bringing a defining chapter of Hindi cinema music to a close.

The singer shared the update in a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), thanking listeners for their support and confirming his decision to step away from playback work. Playback singing involves recording songs that actors later lip-sync to on-screen.

“Hello and happy new year to everyone. I want to thank you for giving me so much love over the years as listeners,” Arijit wrote. “I am happy to announce that I am not going to take any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. It was a wonderful journey.”

A voice that shaped modern Hindi film music

Over the past decade, Arijit Singh’s voice became inseparable from Bollywood’s emotional language. His soft ballads and restrained delivery redefined how romance and heartbreak sounded on screen.

Songs such as Tum Hi Ho, Channa Mereya, Raabta, and Agar Tum Saath Ho moved beyond charts to become cultural reference points. Whether picturised on Ranbir Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapur, or other leading actors, his songs often carried more emotional weight than the scenes themselves.

As a result, Arijit emerged not just as a successful playback singer but as the defining voice of a generation of Hindi film music.

A career shaped by persistence, not privilege

Arijit’s rise was not without obstacles. At one point, a public disagreement with actor Salman Khan reportedly reduced his presence in certain high-profile projects. Even so, audience demand ensured his continued dominance in film music.

Rather than industry alliances, Arijit’s longevity rested on consistency, restraint, and an ability to let the song not the singer, take centre stage.

Choosing independence, not silence

Importantly, Arijit has not announced a complete retirement from music. Instead, he signalled a shift away from film-driven output toward independent creation and learning.

“God has been kind to me,” he wrote. “I am a fan of good music and in the future will keep learning and doing more on my own as a small little artist.”

That choice comes at a moment when the music industry increasingly prioritises volume, trends, and algorithmic performance. Arijit’s decision appears less reactive and more deliberate — a move toward creative control rather than withdrawal.

He was recently seen collaborating with Ed Sheeran, suggesting his next phase may extend beyond Bollywood and into more global, self-directed work.

Fans respond with emotion and curiosity

The announcement triggered an outpouring of reactions online. Many fans described the moment as the end of an emotional era in Hindi cinema, while others expressed hope that his independent work would offer something more personal and enduring.

For Bollywood, the absence of Arijit Singh’s voice will be immediately felt. For listeners, however, the story may not be ending, only changing shape.
